After the loss of their son, ex-Sheriff George Blackledge (Kevin Costner) and his wife Margaret (Diane Lane) decide to leave their Montana ranch to go rescue their young grandson from the clutches of a dangerous family that lives far from the law in the state of Dakota, whose matriarch is Blanche Weboy (Lesley Manville).
When they find them, they discover that the Weboy family has no intention of letting go of their grandson, so George and Margaret have no choice but to fight for their family.
The film, written and directed by Thomas Bezucha, is based on the novel by Larry Watson.
