John Petersen (Viggo Mortensen) lives with his partner Eric (Terry Chen) and daughter Monica (Gabby Velis) in Southern California. His father Willis (Lance Henriksen / Sverrir Gudnason) is a farmer with more traditional ideas and attitudes and an idea of a nuclear family of yesteryear. The difference between the two is continually a point of conflict and frustration for their relationship.
When Willis decides to travel to Los Angeles indefinitely with the intention of finding a good place to retire, father and son have to learn to live together while two very different worlds face each other.
